LP_Cover_Steve Reich
A visual interpretation of minimalist music through album cover design, custom typography, and motion graphics inspired by Music for 18 Musicians.
LP_Cover_Steve Reich is an album cover redesign and motion graphics project inspired by Music for 18 Musicians, the seminal work of musical minimalism composed by Steve Reich. Through graphic design, typography, and motion design, the project explores how visual language can translate the structural and rhythmic qualities of minimalist music into a cohesive visual identity.
At the core of the project is a custom typeface developed specifically in response to Reich's compositional approach. Inspired by gradual progression, repetition, layering, and the continuous accumulation of harmonic patterns, the typeface transforms musical principles into visual form. The letterforms evolve through systematic variations, reflecting the temporal nature and rhythmic structure of the composition.
The project extends beyond print through a motion design component that animates the custom typeface, allowing the visual language to unfold over time. Drawing from the repetitive structures and gradual shifts characteristic of Music for 18 Musicians, the animation explores how rhythm, duration, and accumulation can be expressed through typography, creating a dialogue between musical composition and visual perception. Together, the print and motion components form a cohesive visual interpretation of minimalist music.
