Othering
A triptych poster series exploring identity, prejudice, social division, and the psychology of the Us vs. Them mentality through experimental graphic design.
Othering is an experimental poster design project that explores the concept of “othering” and the psychology of the Us vs. Them mentality. Rooted in social and cultural theory, the project examines how group identity, prejudice, and exclusion contribute to inequality, stereotyping, and social marginalization.
The work consists of a triptych poster series, with each poster developed through a distinct visual approach: surrealist, metaphorical, and typographic. By employing experimental graphic design methods, the project investigates how visual language can communicate complex social issues related to identity, perception, belonging, and division.
Through the use of symbolism, conceptual imagery, and expressive typography, the series challenges viewers to reflect on the mechanisms that shape collective identities and reinforce boundaries between individuals and groups. Each poster offers a different perspective on the process of othering, encouraging critical engagement with the ways prejudice is constructed, perceived, and perpetuated within society.
Combining research-driven design with conceptual storytelling, Othering demonstrates how graphic design can serve as a tool for social commentary, visual advocacy, and cultural reflection. The project invites audiences to question assumptions about identity and difference while fostering greater awareness of the social dynamics that influence human relationships and community formation.
